Canada investigating naval drones

Canadian Press is reporting that Canadian Defense Minister Peter Mackay is promoting the addition of unmanned surface vehicles (in other words robotic boats without crews) into the Canadian Navy. The Canadian government has already funded Rolls Royce with $3 million to investigate USV’s in Nova Scotia, a move that smacks of pork barrelling, since Mackay’s home and constuency is in Nova Scotia.

The new naval ship drones might replace Canadian frigates about to be mothballed, the CP article suggested. (Although an unmanned frigate would be a giant step for Canada from the type of robotic boats now being operated by other countries).

As with aerial drones, Israel is one of the leaders with naval drones, and it is possible that the move by Canada towards naval drones will further cement ties between Canada and the supremicist state.
