Canada to Arm the Next Generation of Drones

On 5 March, 2009 the CBC reported that the next generation of Canadian UAV ‘s (drones) will be armed.  Significantly, the head of the Canadian air force, Lt. General Angus Watt felt obligated to emphasize that the armed drones would be operated completely within the terms of international law. Presumably this was to distance Canadian policy from the policies of allies like the US and Israel, who do not operate their UAV systems within the terms of international law.

Canada’s current generation of drones, based on the Israeli Heron drone, and acquired from Israel, is now being deployed in Afghanistan.
